TWO QUESTIONS

Question 1: If you were to do die today, do you know for sure that you would be with God in heaven?

Question 2: How would you respond to God if he met you at the gates of heaven and asked "Why should I let you into my heaven?"

If you answered "no" to question 1, then I have good news: this very day you can be sure that you will be with God in heaven.  I will get to that in a minute.

If you answered yes to question 1, then question 2 is meant to help you make sure. So many people believe that as long as our good works outweigh our bad works then God will let us in. But the Bible teaches that God weighs us against Himself. The scriptures ask: "Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully." (Psalm 24:3-4)

In order to be accepted, we have to be as pure and innocent as God. But that's just it - none of us are pure and innocent as the Scriptures say, "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". (Romans 3:23) Also, there is nothing any of us can do to make ourselves pure and innocent. Our only hope is Jesus who was the only human being to ever live a truly pure and innocent life. The scriptures say Jesus was tempted "as we are, yet without sin." (Hebrews 4:15)

But that's not all: Jesus, who was truly pure and innocent died on the cross in order to make sinners pure, and to forgive them of their guilt and shame. We know that he was successful because God raised him from the dead on the third day which meant the payment for sin was made in full.

The right answer to question 2 is not "I have been a good person and haven't done anything really bad." The answer is simply this: "Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross and was raised again to earn a place for me in heaven. And this is the ONLY reason you should let me in!" The only way for anyone to be certain they have eternal life is by believing in  Jesus alone and asking him to give you his free gift of eternal life. "These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." (John 20:31)
